Alberta Horse Trials is proud that 2025 marks the eighteenth year of the Eventing High Performance Program.

The High Performance (HP) Program is aimed at identifying and developing Alberta riders, horses and coaches. Riders, meeting the membership criteria, are invited to register in the program for the following season. Active Eventing coaches are welcome to audit all HP riding sessions at no charge.  The program is split into 3 tiers: U18; Development and the High Performance tier.

The U18 Program is designed to support riders in the age groups of 12-18 years who have competed at the EV90 level and above. It is our hope that these educational opportunities can lead to a greater competence in developing the skills to compete safely at the level. This program is designed to assist a wide range of riders. Whether they have ambitions to move up the levels and compete internationally at the USEF Eventing Young Rider Championships or stay in Alberta and compete at the local level. The U18 program  can be used as a stepping stone in developing riders to move on to the Development Team.

The Development Team is designed to initiate a relationship between up and coming Alberta riders and the HP Team and coach. Riders and horses who have successfully completed 3 or more EV100 level horse trials (with qualifying MER per current EC Guidelines) are eligible to apply for this tier of the HP Program. Through coaching and consultation, the aim is to prepare horses and riders to move up the levels or be considered for the USEF Eventing Young Rider Championships.

The High Performance Team is designed to help riders gain the extra coaching and tools that are required to successfully move up through the EV110 and above, competition levels. Through coaching and consultation, the aim is to prepare horses and riders to be considered by the National Federation for the EC Development squad, or the USEF Eventing Young Rider Championships. Horse and rider (not necessarily as a combination) require successful completion of 3 or more EV110 level horse trials and have the intent to compete at the EV110 level in 2024.

The HP program does not supply full time coaching.  The members are expected to be in a program with their own coaches. The members receive support from the High Performance Coach/Consultant by attending clinics and educational sessions organized through the HP Program. They are encouraged to bring their coaches to audit the riding sessions  so that a Training Program can be developed and discussion can be had regarding what may be lacking in the rider’s individual training program as they move up the levels to start training for and competing at the upper levels of Eventing.

The High Performance Coach/Consultant for 2025 is Leahona Rowland, from Kelowna, BC. The High Performance/Athlete Development Chairperson is Kathleen Ziegler. The HP Committee will consist of the current Coach/Consultant; the HP Chairperson; a current senior rider and 1 additional person involved with High Performance (rider or parent).

All members must agree to comply with the Equestrian Canada Code of Conduct & Ethics.
